What is optimist?
The optimist is a small beginner sailing vessel created in 1947 by the architect Clark Mills. With a flat-bottomed hull, equipped with a single sail, the optimist is a light, stable, unsinkable and very easy to manoeuvre vessel. Due to its reduced dimensions, the optimist is ideal for learning sailing in the younger age groups (from 6 to 12 years old).
How long do I need to how to sail?
sailing is a relatively fast learning sport. As a general rule, practitioners should be able to navigate alone with some autonomy from the very first session. It is very important to accept and respect that each practitioner has their own windsurf learning pace. Normally, between 2 am and 6 am, students should be able to practice alone and take responsibility for their own evolution. Our main focus is to induce, in a safe way, the evolution of practitioners, so that they can navigate independently as soon as possible. Whatever your stage, at Escola de Vela da Lagoa you will have experienced and duly qualified instructors ready to assist you in your progression.
The rental regime is aimed at children between 6 and 13 years old, who already know how to navigate and who have at least a safe level of autonomy. Maybe they no longer need classes, but just accumulate hours of practice. During the rental regime, your young sailors must always be under the careful supervision of a responsible adult. To rent equipment you must ensure that young sailors have the following skills:
Know how to swim and be comfortable in deep water;
Keep the navigation line and do not drift excessively;
Keeping calm in a capsize situation;
Being able to turn the boat even if the wind is strong;
Have a good spatial awareness and be able to manage your position in the lagoon;
being able to avoid collisions.
